Countless movies have been made about the Vietnam War and there continues to be a great deal of interest in the conflict. The game is a stand-alone product and is based on Digital Illusions' own idea, which builds further on the successful Battlefield 1942 concept. The new game's action is set during the Vietnam War.
 
Battlefield Vietnam will contain new technology that enables new functionality and new play styles. The battles play out on a variety of battlefields including the city streets of Saigon and the jungles surrounding the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Players can choose to be part of two different forces: the United States or North Vietnam/Vietcong. The vehicles include period armored tanks, helicopters, and fighter jets.
