Steam coming to Linux[ Comment ] 1:58 PST | Shadowex3 | Print News | Category: Steam - Source Engine - Other NewsGood news for Linux users out there: Michael Larabel of Phoronix flew out to Bellevue recently at Valve's invitation and reports back that Valve is hard at work porting Steam and their games... and has more extensive plans in the works. Valve is currently hiring everything from Linux OpenGL programmers to kernel developers. All signs back up Phoronix's conclusions that Valve is flat out rebuilding Source and Steam to run natively on Linux. In Mr. larabel's own words:
"This Linux work just is not some half-assed attempt by them to make it look like they are a Linux-friendly organization. Gabe's vision to support, embrace, and promote Linux are amazing, assuming they execute, which looks to be very high probability at this point."
Gaming is one of the last major holdouts in Linux compatibility, if Valve makes a wholesale shift to native support like they did with OSX then it could be as significant of an event for Linux as it is for Valve.

Valve hiring... hardware developers?[ Comment ] 3:05 PST | Shadowex3 | Print News | Category: Other NewsAn interesting report at Develop reveals that Valve is currently hiring staff to develop new hardware. Rumors are flying on this one, ranging from the suspiciously undenied possibility of a console to improving their already impressive research capabilities through advanced biometric feedback devices that could measure a player's emotional responses.
Given the nature of Steam it's not entirely impossible that Valve may be planning to make a console that's always on, always up to date, and always ready to go... or perhaps a peripheral that would allow them to tailor content to a user's emotional state. Just imagine, an escort mission where the NPC can finally respond to your feelings of world-consuming rage.

Strange weapons, stats tracking, and prizes[ Comment ] 18:23 PST | Shadowex3 | Print News | Category: Team Fortress 2Valve's working on some new stat tracking features revolving around strange weapons. Crates may now contain Strange Parts which allow users to customise which stat their strange items track ranging from gibbed players to reflected projectiles "and more". Additionally three unique tophats have been added to the game as awards for whichever player currently has given the most gifts, won the most duels, or purchased the most stamps.
The Manniversary update includes a number of features ranging from a significantly improved process for content creators with the Steam Workshop, an FPSBanana style content hub where third party content can be rated and commented on by the TF2 community and creators can receive feedback and status updates from Valve.
Other significant features include a six day free try-before-buying trial period for Mann Co. store weapons with a 25% discount on purchases made during the trial, a purchasable High Five taunt, load-out presets and a new map. Lastly there are two somewhat Interesting additions: The ability to apply user decals to certain items and the ability to become a "Hot dog Expert".
ETF2L's Third Ultidio Cup[ Comment ] 0:44 PST | Shadowex3 | Print NewsBetter late than never the Third Ultidio Cup from ETF2L has finally opened it's doors and will start up (and close down signups) on October 2nd. The first place winners will walk away with $300 in cash, and second place will come in at a third of that with $100. As always further details are available on the tournament page
A surprise, and substantial, CS:S update[ Comment ] 23:54 PST | Shadowex3 | Print News | Category: Counter-StrikeA while back a laundry list of changes were run through the CS:S Beta, looking like they were headed for mainstream. With today's update it would appear that Valve hasn't forgotten the old girl after all and has made some significant updates to the weapons and associated systems. Here's the highlights:
Dynamic crosshair now uses actual weapon accuracy, rather than a separate simulation
Weapon spread patterns are no longer square
All weapons now have a new accuracy model which fixes many bugs and provides more intuitive weapon behavior
Weapons now have separate accuracy penalties for jumping, landing, and standing on ladders
All weapons are now more accurate while crouching
Accuracy penalties for movement no longer have a discrete threshold, but scale between crouch move and run speed
In addition to the systemic changes a number of balance adjustments were made, most significantly bringing the Galil and Famas run speeds up and further increasing the FAMAS' accuracy as well as lowering the spread of its burst mode. There have also been a number of console variable tweaks, some making the game more mod friendly and others shutting down exploits, and more robust options for customizing the crosshair were added.
Portal free once again[ Comment ] 23:35 PST | Shadowex3 | Print News | Category: PortalIn case you missed it the first time around Valve has once again decided to collectively troll their accounting department and made Portal free until the 20th. As before this is not a limited-playtime offer, these are permanent copies just as if you bought the game normally.

TF2 Tournament News[ Comment ] 13:34 PST | Shadowex3 | Print News | Category: Team Fortress 2UGC is starting up Fall Highlander Season 5 on the 12th, although signups will be open for the next few weeks. There are no fees, virtually all maptypes are represented, and most weapons are allowed.
Or, if Highlander is not your thing, there's the first ever Lo-Fi OffClass Cup being put together by Kritzkast and Pubcomp. It's a new format where Soldiers, Demomen, and Scouts are banned. The format is 6v6 with up to two Pyros, Snipers, or Spies and only one Heavy, Engineer, or Medic. Unlocks are restricted as well so be sure to check out the page for full details. If you're interested signups are open and you can join the other ~20 or so teams that have already signed up Here.
In this Coop Mutation we pit you against non-stop hunters. No booms, no spit, no tongues, no charges, no being ridden… Great practice on dead stopping a hunter pounce.
Also in an amusing display of culture disparity the results of the recent poll asking whether players preferred single instance weapons or another for everyone have come back with interesting results: On the PC the split was 40/60 for single vs everyone getting a gun, while on the 360 the results were 25% to 75%.
Community vs Pros II coming up[ Comment ] 13:50 PST | Shadowex3 | Print News | Category: Team Fortress 2 - Competitive GamingThree online communities will continue the neverending war of pub vs comp players just two weeks from now on the 17th. At 9pm EST a Highlander team of hand-picked public TF2 players including Robin Walker will meet the 6 man professional team The Experiment on the field of battle in Community vs Pros II. The spectacle will be broadcast live for all to see.
Maps have received a graphical overhaul but are "largely" intact
The game will ship with Dust, Dust2, Aztec, Nuke, Inferno, Italy and Office
There's a "Casual Mode" with unlimited money, alltalk, and full spectating
There is still "Competitive" mode, with a promise to "raise the skill ceiling"
Valve will be hosting stock servers featuring ELO or friendlist based matchmaking
The 360 will be stuck with a gamepad for now
They are "striving" for Cross-platform matchmaking
Random spawnpoints are binned for now
New weapons: Decoy Grenade, Molotov, Negev, Tec-9, Mag-7, Sawed Off, Bizon, and a humiliation Tazer
None of this is set in stone however as Valve has proven willing to work with players, for example armor will not be removed from the game after Source players argued against it heavily. Additionally, in celebration of the latest CS:GO trailer the entire Counter-Strike franchise is currently on sale.
And, on one last note, Valve employee Ido Magal has stated there will be NO INGAME HAT SALES.
