How do I set up an IRC?
Setting up an Internet Relay Chat requires an IRC client, i.e. a chat program that can either be installed on a local computer or that forms a web-based component of a browser or third-party server – in other words, a web chat.
We have created a guide for you on how to install an IRC client, connect to an IRC server, and access Internet Relay Chat in a few simple steps.
Selecting an IRC client
First off, you need to choose an IRC client. Depending on the operating system, various options are available. Most of them are free software and already have several IRC networks where you can exchange information with other users. Common IRC clients for Windows and Linux are mIRC, HexChat, Nettalk, WeeChat and Pidgin. You need to buy a licence to legally use the mIRC proprietary client.
We recommend using Nettalk, a powerful but easy-to-use IRC client for Windows. It supports UTF-8 and DCC file transfer, it performs spell checks, and it has a multilingual user interface. Nettalk can manage multiple connections, the preferences of which are stored individually. Free and open-source, it comes with a portable install option.
Download NetTalk
Steps
1 ) Install and Open Nettalk. It's recommended that you install the version with NettalkSetup (setup in this case means installer), but if you prefer it, a portable version is also available.
2 ) Once you start Nettalk you will probably be presented with a network connection wizard. If not, you can start the process yourself by selecting "New" IRC Connection from the Connections menu, the top left icon on the row.
The New IRC Connection wizard has three screens:
a ) The first time you run the program/select a new connection on the menu, you will see the Server screen.
-Leave the "Use the name of the network" option selected.
-Copy irc.gamesurge.net and paste it as the "IP or server name".
-Leave the "Server port" set to 6667.
Then press Next.
b ) You're in the User Details screen now, personal information to fill in. You do not have to use your actual real name. Setting up a password is only meaningful if you do not wish other people with access to your computer to use this connection.
-Enter a nickname you want to use. You can change it later when you connect.
-Enter a password if you wish to do so.
-Enter a "real name" or some name initials.
-Enter a USER-ID. This will be combined with your IP to create a unique ID. Nothing terribly important.
Then press Next.
c ) Now you arrived at the Startup Commands screen. Here you can add (optional) startup commands to be executed after joining the network.
-To join all your favourite channels, copy and paste on the box:
/join #foxtare
/join #gamesurge
This will allow you to connect to the Team FoxTare channel and the main GameSurge channel automatically, when you start up Nettalk.
-Click on "Complete" when you are done. You're all set.
-Note the 4 tabs in the main window now. Server lists all the connections created. GameSurge tab features the server network you just joined, it's message of the day, etc. This tab is not for chat, but commands can be used here. For example you can change your nick, auth manually (if you want to register), or join channels. The 2 remaining tabs are Chatrooms that you have joined, #foxtare and #gamesurge.
-To chat with us select the #foxtare tab, type hello in the text box below and press enter. The channel operators have a @ sign before their nicknames to denote their status, and they will welcome and help everyone who joins the channel.
Other
-The "Rooms" icon displays all channels visible on the current network (GameSurge), it's the same as typing the /list >0 command on the text box.
-There are many commands that can be used on IRC, but only a handful are needed for chat. These are all you need to get started:
/nick nickname - Changes your nickname.
/join #channel - Joins a channel. All channels have # in front of their name. You can also join by double clicking a channel in the Rooms tab.
/part - Leaves the current channel. You can also leave by closing the tab.
/away away message - Sets you away leave a message explaining that you are not currently paying attention to IRC.
/msg nickname - Sends a private message to a user.
/me message - Sends an action message to the current channel or query window.
-You may wish to check the Options to further configure Nettalk, but the defaults are fine for now. Most of it is self-explanatory. If you have any trouble with the setup, ask anything on our Forums (Off Topic) and we will be glad to help you.
