Sniper Rifles

The key feature of modern sniper rifles is reliable placement of a bullet often at comparatively long distances, with a design that supports this goal. Common features include precision manufacture, a highly reliable gun action, a precise scope or optical system, and almost always some support device for the shooter to fire from multiple positions. The need for high reliability and simplicity has resulted in many modern rifles continuing to be bolt action, though many are semi-automatic. The scope is dependent on the rifles and intended engagement distance. Some large caliber sniper rifles are sighted out to 1500 m (1640 yards) with ultra high-magnification scopes, while rifles intended for urban combat and more limited range would use much less magnification. Many modern rifles incorporate bipods to steady the rifle for accurate shooting.

In BF2, obviously the sniper rifle is the primary weapon from the sniper class. Sniper rifles are not meant to be fired “from the hip”. When used without zooming, the sniper rifles are the least accurate weapons in the game, by far. Hitting anything with an un-zoomed sniper rifle beyond point-blank can be considered very good luck. When running around the map as a sniper, it’s a good idea to have your pistol out instead of your rifle.

It’s also important to note that firing a zoomed sniper rifle while standing or kneeling is no less accurate than being prone. While it’s usually best to remain prone to avoid being spotted and present a more difficult target, it is good to know that a standing zoomed shot has just as much chance of hitting as a prone one, which can be important in some situations.

Your chance of a hit is greatly increased by letting the sights “settle” on the target for a moment before taking the shot whenever possible. Snap shots are much less accurate, especially as the range increases.
