RPK-74

RPK-74

Details

The only functional difference between the Type 95 and the M249 is the ammo capacity. While the RPK-74 has a lower rate of fire than the M249 or Type 95, it is the most accurate basic LMG when firing multiple rounds, and does more damage per shot than the other LMGs as well.

Always drop to the prone position and you will get decent accuracy for short and intermediate ranges if you fire in short bursts. Watch the heat indicator, if you use the gun with sustained fire the gun will overheat and you’ll have to wait for it to cool down - another reason to fire in short bursts. Go prone in a narrow alley way and mow down enemies as they run down the alley, you can rack up quite a few kills this way. Beware, sometimes some idiot on your team could jump in front of you (while you are firing!) and you’ll end up killing them, so either be ready to let off the fire button, or prepare for a team kill. Just remember you need to go prone before firing – fire while standing and you’ll hit everything but the target.

The LMG is the primary weapon of the support class and is also used as mounted stationary gun.

In the 'real world'

The RPK-74 was introduced in the late 70’s and quickly became the standard squad machine gun for the Russians replacing both the RPK and the PKM. It uses a gas-actuated rotating bolt fire action and can fire 600 rounds per minute although realisticly this is more like 150 rpm. This weapon is fed from 45 round box magazines using 5.45 x 39 mm calibre ammo and has an effective range of around 460 m. The RPK is not to be used without its bipod and should be fired prone in short bursts to avoid overheating, at which point you have to wait for it to cool down. 1)
